The energy market is experiencing unprecedented levels of change, driven by technological advances, national net zero commitments and the rapid evolution in consumers’ expectations of their energy suppliers.  M Group Services Energy Division is ideally positioned to capitalise on the opportunity that this presents, with strong market positions in all of its core services, and an exciting pipeline of new services and products.  


We are looking for a candidate with the energy, appetite and persuasive skills to ensure that our relationships with our most important customers thrive, and to make the most of the opportunities presented by this widespread market change.  


Reporting to Tom, the Director of Sales & Strategy, you will be responsible for driving sustainable, long-term growth of MGS Energy’s largest energy retailer customers – those for whom we deliver significant contracts comprising services from across the MGS portfolio. As such, the role benefits from significant senior exposure and will be a key contributor to board-level discussions regarding the future direction of the business and our services. 


You will work closely with internal functions including Commercial, Business Development, Sales and the Client/Contract Management functions within each Business Unit, in addition to MGS partners and suppliers.  You will engage strategically to maintain constructive customer relations, manage expectations and identify growth opportunities. These opportunities will be promptly and successfully mobilised to increase the scope and value of services delivered.  As a Strategic Account Director, you will also develop and mobilise new products to meet the emerging needs of your customers, and to support the acquisition of new customers.

Key responsibilities...


  • Develop structured account strategies to ensure customers’ plans, priorities, challenges and stakeholders are well understood 

  • Identify opportunities to increase the value of contracts, either through increased volume or scope of services

  • Work closely with the BD function to deliver growth via ad hoc projects, requests for proposals or  formal tender processes

  • Develop close, constructive relationships with key customer stakeholders and decision-makers 

  • Manage structured and ad hoc engagement with customers, in line with contract obligations and customer expectations; lead on Quarterly and Annual business reviews, supporting weekly and monthly reviews as required 

  • Contribute to the continuous improvement and growth of MGS, including the identification of new services and markets that meet the evolving needs of customers 

  • Build market knowledge across areas of regulation, trends, developments, new technologies and competitor activity 

  • With the support of the Commercial function, ensure any adjustments to contracts are appropriately governed, signed off and captured in contract change documentation 

  • With business unit Client/Contract teams, ensure pricing adjustments including indexation, volume-banding and NLW adjustments are correctly agreed and applied and meet contract obligations and customer expectations


What you'll bring to the role… 



  • A minimum of five years responsibility with quantifiable results in customer-facing roles (e.g. contract negotiation, administration and/or management)

  • Previous leadership experience to be able to manage and motive direct reports

  • The ability to operate in a matrix environment, coordinating the activities of multiple teams and functions to meet the expectations of customers

  • Influence, persuasion and relationship building skills alongside resilience and perseverance 

  • Meticulous attention to detail

  • Demonstrable negotiation and problem-solving skills

  • Robust skills in Microsoft office software, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint  

  • Ability to travel nationally to meet with customers and be present at our Newcastle office. Option to work from home as appropriate. 


  • Degree qualified 

  • Knowledge or previous experience within the utilities sector 

  • Contract modelling software skills 

  • Mobilisation and project management skills 

  • Development of customer orientated new products and technology roadmaps

  • Salary £60-80K Dependant on Experience
